MS (Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic)

Maintenance Supervisor chief mechanic

Purpose

Maintenance Supervisor course is as per IMO Resolution A.1079(28) adopted on 4th Dec 2013. This course is applicable for non propulsion vessel such as Construction, Pipe-lay and Accommodation barges; Semisub and Jackup drilling units etc which use anchor to stay in position.

This course is open to any mid level offshore rig worker having engineering background. The Course is Approved by Liberia (LISCR) Flag State. On completion of the course you receive Certificate of Proficiency approved by LISCR.

Prerequisite

1) Four years of service aboard MOUs including at least one year of service as mechanic, motorman, sub sea engineer, electrician, toolpusher, unit superintendent, crane operator or equivalent supervisory position on MOUs.

OR

2)  Hold a Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized school of technology and have one year of service as barge engineer, mechanic, motorman, sub sea engineer, electrician, toolpusher, unit superintendent, crane operator or equivalent supervisory position on MOUs.

The syllabus covers

Maintenance Supervisor – On non-self-propelled MOUs, the person assigned responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the power plant and auxiliary machinery should have knowledge, experience and competence in each of the following:

  • Operation and maintenance of engines
  • Operation and maintenance of auxiliary machinery
  • Detection of machinery malfunction and faults
  • Maintenance and repair problems
  • Operation and maintenance of fire detection and control system
  • Safe working practices
  • Maintenance of survival craft and launching appliances
  • Pollution prevention procedures

Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic is senior most rank in mechanical department on a MODU or Offshore Work Barge, Pipe-lay vessel etc. On propelled offshore rigs, Chief mechanic is considered a superior position than the Marine Chief Engineer and paid higher than Marine Chief Engineer. The job profile of a maintenance supervisor is to look after drilling machinery and Diesel power generators. In case of propelled MODU, diesel power generator is looked after by Marine Chief engineer and Chief Mechanic looks after only drilling equipment.

Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic Course

Purpose
The Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic course aligns with the standards of IMO Resolution A.1079(28), adopted on 4th December 2013. It is designed for personnel working on non-propulsion vessels such as Construction, Pipe-lay, Accommodation barges, as well as Semi-submersible and Jack-up drilling units that utilize anchors for positioning. The course provides specialized training for mid-level offshore rig workers with an engineering background, ensuring they have the required skills to manage and maintain mechanical operations aboard these vessels.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Proficiency approved by the Liberia (LISCR) Flag State.
Who Should Attend
This course is open to mid-level offshore rig workers with an engineering background, such as those in supervisory roles, who are responsible for maintaining and operating equipment on Mobile Offshore Units (MOUs). Ideal candidates include those looking to enhance their knowledge and qualifications for the position of Maintenance Supervisor or Chief Mechanic.

Prerequisites
Participants must meet one of the following prerequisites to enroll in this course:
1. Experience-Based Eligibility:
o A minimum of four years of service aboard MOUs, with at least one year of service in a role such as mechanic, motorman, sub-sea engineer, electrician, toolpusher, unit superintendent, crane operator, or an equivalent supervisory position on MOUs.
2. Educational Eligibility:
o A Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized school of technology, along with one year of service in a role such as barge engineer, mechanic, motorman, sub-sea engineer, electrician, toolpusher, unit superintendent, crane operator, or an equivalent supervisory position on MOUs.

Syllabus Overview
The course covers the essential responsibilities and knowledge areas required for a Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic on non-self-propelled MOUs. Participants will gain expertise in:
• Operation and Maintenance of Engines
Understanding the mechanisms, performance, and upkeep of engine systems.
• Operation and Maintenance of Auxiliary Machinery
Ensuring the smooth operation of supporting equipment crucial to rig functions.
• Detection of Machinery Malfunctions and Faults
Diagnosing and addressing issues to maintain operational efficiency.
• Maintenance and Repair Challenges
Learning techniques for troubleshooting and effective repair strategies.
• Operation and Maintenance of Fire Detection and Control Systems
Keeping fire safety systems functional and up-to-date for crew and asset protection.
• Safe Working Practices
Emphasizing safety protocols in the maintenance and operational activities aboard the vessel.
• Maintenance of Survival Craft and Launching Appliances
Ensuring that life-saving equipment is operational and ready for deployment.
• Pollution Prevention Procedures
Following industry standards and environmental regulations to prevent pollution from the rig or barge.
Role of Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic
A Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic holds the senior-most position within the mechanical department of a MODU (Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit) or Offshore Work Barge. Their role includes the supervision and upkeep of drilling machinery and diesel power generators.
• On non-propelled offshore rigs, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all machinery onboard, including auxiliary systems and drilling equipment.
• On propelled MODUs, the Chief Mechanic typically focuses on drilling equipment while the Marine Chief Engineer handles the diesel power generators. However, the Chief Mechanic is considered to hold a superior role to the Marine Chief Engineer and is often compensated at a higher rate.

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded the Certificate of Proficiency approved by the Liberia (LISCR) Flag State.

Why Choose This Course?
