Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic Course Online — LISCR Certified

5-Day Live Online Training | IMO A.1079(28) Compliant | Liberia (LISCR) Flag-State Approved

Rig Maintenance Supervisor course is open to any mid level offshore rig worker having engineering background. The Maintenance Supervisor training  is Approved by Liberia (LISCR) Flag State. On completion of the course you receive Certificate directly from Liberia Registry (LISCR) and can apply for Maintenance Supervisor License.

Introduction

The Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic (MS) course at Elite Offshore Academy qualifies you for the senior-most mechanical position on a Mobile Offshore Unit — Jack-Up Rigs, Semi-Submersibles, Accommodation Barges, Pipe-Lay Barges, and Construction Barges. The course is approved by the Liberia International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) and is fully aligned with IMO Resolution A.1079(28). On completion you receive a Certificate of Proficiency directly from LISCR flag state — accepted by major drilling contractors, accommodation-barge operators, and pipe-lay companies worldwide.

Unlike Marine Chief Engineers who handle propulsion, the Chief Mechanic / Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for drilling equipment and diesel power generators on a MODU — and is typically paid at a higher rate than the Marine Chief Engineer. This course is your pathway to that role.

Role of the Chief Mechanic

What Does a Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic Do?

The Maintenance Supervisor (also called Chief Mechanic) is the senior-most position in the mechanical department of a MODU or Offshore Work Barge. Their primary responsibilities include:

On Non-Propelled MOUs (Jack-Up Rigs, Semi-Submersibles, Construction Barges):

– Full responsibility for all drilling machinery and diesel power generators

– Oversight of all mechanical, auxiliary, and support systems

– Management of the entire mechanical crew including motormen and mechanics

On Propelled MODUs:

– The Chief Mechanic focuses exclusively on drilling equipment

– The Marine Chief Engineer manages propulsion and diesel generators

– Crucially: the Chief Mechanic is considered the superior position to the Marine Chief Engineer and is compensated at a higher rate.

Salary Range (2026): USD 48,000–101,500 per year (US figures). Middle East and North Sea rates are comparable. Indian domestic rates vary by contractor.

After earning the LISCR Maintenance Supervisor certificate, many professionals proceed to the OIM course — the final step to full command of an MOU.

The syllabus covers

Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic – On non-self-propelled MOUs, the person assigned responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the power plant and auxiliary machinery should have knowledge, experience and competence in each of the following:

  • Operation and maintenance of engines
  • Operation and maintenance of auxiliary machinery
  • Detection of machinery malfunction and faults
  • Maintenance and repair problems
  • Operation and maintenance of fire detection and control system
  • Safe working practices
  • Maintenance of survival craft and launching appliances
  • Pollution prevention procedures

FAQ

Q1. What is the Maintenance Supervisor / Chief Mechanic (MS) course?

The MS course trains offshore engineers and mechanics to take full mechanical command of a Mobile Offshore Unit (MODU). It is approved by LISCR (Liberia flag state) and aligned with IMO Resolution A.1079(28). On completion, you can apply for your LISCR Maintenance Supervisor Certificate of Proficiency.

Q2. How long is the MS course and how is it delivered?

Five days, fully online as a live instructor-led classroom via video conferencing. No travel required. Scheduling is adjusted for multiple time zones including India, Middle East, South-East Asia, and West Africa.

Q3. How much does the Maintenance Supervisor course cost?

INR 57,000 per delegate. Corporate group rates are available — contact us at +91-9699272855. The LISCR certificate you receive has a 5-year validity.

Q4. What are the prerequisites for the MS / Chief Mechanic course?

Option A: Minimum 4 years of MOU service including at least 1 year in a role such as mechanic, motorman, sub-sea engineer, electrician, toolpusher, crane operator, or equivalent supervisory position. Option B: BSc degree from a recognised school of technology plus 1 year of supervisory MOU service.

Q5. Is the LISCR Maintenance Supervisor certificate valid internationally?

Yes. The Liberia (LISCR) flag-state approval and IMO A.1079(28) alignment make the certificate accepted by major drilling contractors and offshore operators worldwide — including Transocean, Maersk, Valaris, Van Oord, Sapura Energy, and COSL.

Q6. What is the difference between a Maintenance Supervisor and Marine Chief Engineer?

On a non-propelled MODU (Jack-Up Rig, Semi-Submersible), the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for ALL machinery including drilling equipment and diesel generators. On a propelled MODU, the Chief Mechanic handles drilling equipment while the Marine Chief Engineer handles propulsion — but the Chief Mechanic ranks above the Marine Chief Engineer and is paid more.

Q7. Can I take the MS course from outside India?

Yes. The course is fully online and students have joined from Nigeria, UAE, Qatar, Malaysia, Indonesia, and across Europe. A stable broadband connection and a computer with camera and microphone is all you need.

Q8. What is the career path after the Maintenance Supervisor certificate?

Many MS graduates proceed to the OIM (Offshore Installation Manager) course — the next step toward full command of an MOU. Elite Offshore Academy offers OIM training as well. Ask about our combined MS + OIM pathway.

Q9. Is BCO (MOU Stability) required before the MS course?

BCO is not a mandatory prerequisite for the MS course itself, unlike OIM. However, if you plan to proceed to OIM after MS, you will need BCO. We recommend taking BCO first to streamline your certification pathway.

Q10. How long is the MS / Chief Mechanic certificate valid?

Five years from the date of issue. Refresher training is recommended at the five-year mark and is often required by operators before extension.
